Winter Wilderness Adventure - 3 Day Winter Snowshoe Tour & Cozy Yurt Getaway
From the very first time we welcomed guests to stay overnight in ‘The Nellie’ on Grant Lake, we realized that we just had to get people out here for longer stays. To snowshoe up through this calm, quiet Spruce forest, blanketed with deep white snow and then have a nice wood stove to cozy up to… it’s almost indescribable.
Whether you are well seasoned in the outdoors or never snowshoed or stayed in a yurt before, this 3 day, 2 night tour is one of the best ways to feel truly immersed in the winter wonderland of the Chugach Mountains here on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula.
Day 1: We begin by getting outfitted and ready to go at our base in Historic Moose Pass followed by a snowshoe or winter hike across frozen Trail Lake. Our goal is to bring this small Alaskan town’s history to life through the stories of locals like Alaska Nellie, the ghost of sawmill Al and the famed stories of the Iditarod Trail. After a mile hike south, stopping to take in the views and the feelings of winter travel, we’ll arrive at the Grant Lake Portage trail, half way to our destination. We walk along a section of the Iditarod National Historic Trail as we head up and over the ridge to the stunning, vastness of remote Grant Lake. While our hike is moderately rated, (around 225 Feet of elevation gain), we do encounter varied snow conditions and terrain. We’ll soon arrive at your accommodation, an Alaskan handmade yurt, which is nestled in the hills just above the deep, glacially carved Grant Lake. The feelings while staring out across Grant Lake are hard to describe and the views of this epic winter scene are mesmerizing.
While you’re getting to know camp and adjusting to your surroundings, we’ll get a warm dinner going for you and make sure you have plenty of firewood and a good understanding of the woodstove so you stay nice and toasty through the night. After dinner, we’ll go over the next days plans and then it’s off to dream in your own little corner of paradise in Alaska.
Inclusions: Snowshoe tour & dinner provided. Private yurt stay. (After dinner, the yurt is all yours! Guides overnight off-site)
Day 2: Wake to the smell of campfire coffee and the peaceful sounds of the Alaska wilderness. We’ll cook up a tasty breakfast and spend a relaxing morning talking about our plan for the day. A snowshoe exploration on Grant Lake is usually the plan of action for day 2 and we’ll make the most of it. With abundant points of interest to explore, we’ll get geared up, pack our lunches and snacks and embark on our adventure.
Lunch will be provided during your exploration before turning back toward the comforts of the yurts to share the stories of the day, in front of a cozy fire over dinner in the evening.
Inclusions: Snowshoe tour , breakfast, lunch & dinner provided. Private yurt stay. (After dinner, the yurt is all yours! Guides overnight off-site)
