From Trail Lake to Grant Lake
Paddle Trail Lake, hike the Iditarod Trail, and kayak remote Grant Lake for a true Moose Pass backcountry adventure.
Tour Overview
This full-day kayak and hike adventure is the ultimate way to experience the Moose Pass backcountry by combining paddling on Trail Lake, a guided hike on the Iditarod national Historic Trail, and time exploring the stunning, remote waters of Grant Lake.Â
Paddle Trail Lake in Historic Moose Pass
Your day begins with a scenic paddle across Trail Lake in historic Moose Pass. Along the shoreline, our guides bring this small Alaskan town’s history to life.
Hike the Iditarod Trail to Grant Lake
After paddling south, we pull ashore and transition from paddles to hiking boots. We’ll hike a section of the Iditarod National Historic Trail, climbing up and over a ridge toward Grant Lake. While the hike is rated moderate, it still feels like wild Alaska, especially in in spring and summer when the vegetation grows fast and the trail feels wonderfully untamed.Â
Trailside Meal at Grant Lake + Kayaking Turquoise Waters
Reaching Grant Lake is a “wow” moment with open views, striking blue water, and a sense of remoteness that’s hard to describe. We’ll take time to enjoy lunch with a view, then get back into our kayaks to experience Grant Lake from the water before beginning our return.Â
Return to Moose Pass
After paddling Grant Lake, we hike back down the trail and return to Trail Lake for the final stretch back toward Moose Pass, wrapping up a full day that feels like a true Alaska expedition.Â
