Summer at "The Nellie" - Private Yurt Overlooking Grant Lake

Hanging at the Nellie

Self Supported Public Use Yurt Stay

This is a self-supported, primitive adventure with no guide. Your group must be comfortable with backcountry travel, kayaking in cold water, and camping in bear country in Alaska.

This cozy little hideaway is named after none other than Alaska Nellie, a legendary pioneer who once called this rugged wilderness home. Nellie was a true trailblazer, and we hope that as you settle in at this yurt, you will feel just as welcome as Nellie’s guests did all those years ago and maybe even find a little bit of inspiration from the amazing pioneer herself.

With accommodations for up to 5 people, “The Nellie” features bunks with one double bed and three twin beds, as well as plenty of shelving and hooks to hang up your gear. There’s a handmade spruce table in the center, and you might find a few board games and a deck of cards for some old-fashioned fun during your stay.

Where

Moose Pass is an hour and a half South of Anchorage, just 30 miles from Seward and Kenai Fjords National Park.

Our yurts are located on stunning Grant Lake, a 1 mile kayak and 1 mile hike from Moose Pass, Alaska.

Access to the yurt requires boating to the trailhead. Walking across the railroad bridge is not allowed and the yurt is not accessible from the Upper Grant Lake Trail!

Once at camp, our overnight yurt guests have included access to our kayaks for paddling around Grant Lake from the designated time of Check-In until the time of Check-Out each day.

Why

Our mission with this public use yurt is to create access for people to get outside to explore the great outdoors, and learn more about the environment around us. Connecting with the history of a place and the natural world that surrounds it can be immensely inspiring. We believe that one great trip into the outdoors can be the catalyst people need to become better stewards of the land and defenders of our natural spaces.

We want to make sure that what we offer isn’t just fun but also educational and enlightening. Our hope is that after staying at our yurt, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation and understanding of our mountains, our community and the cultural landscape that surrounds us. And of course we hope to have you back again and again!

One of our main goals is to provide a more personalized experience for your backcountry yurt adventure. We want you to be comfortable, yet still feel that sense of connection that you really only seem to get when you’re out, away from the distractions of a modern world.
